Final D-AIM Demonstration and Workshop
The final D-AIM Demonstration and Workshop was held at Stockholm-Arlanda Airport on June 5. 40 participants from eleven European countries gathered to hear about the D-AIM project through presentations and to witness a live demo.

The D-AIM demo and workshop begun with a welcome speech by Kimmy Bech, Manager Business Development at LFV Air Navigation Services, who then handed over the microphone to Bob Graham, Head of Concept, Strategy & Development at SESAR Joint Undertaking. Bob gave a presentation that put D-AIM, AIM and SWIM into a SESAR JU context.

From EUROCONTROL Paul Bosman, Head of AIM Unit, gave a presentation taking a closer look at trying to define what System Wide Information Management (SWIM) is really all about - is it a concept, is it a box or is it something in between?

Then the presentations became more D-AIM specific, starting with Sam Van der Stricht from EUROCONTROL explaining the principles, philosophies and visions of Digital AIM and its connection to the D-AIM project run by LFV and EUROCONTROL. Following Sams presentation was Roger Li, LFV, getting into more practical details about the work and trials within the project.

After lunch it was time for an exiting live demo. Roger Li first went through what would happen during the live trial which consisted of a 30 minute flight in Stockholm TMA, broadcasting AIS and MET information to a data link and Electronic Flight Bag (EFB) equipped aircraft.

The flight took off from Stockholm-Bromma airport for which a TWY Closure NOTAM were issued, broadcast over the VDL mode 4 data link and displayed to the pilots in the aircraft as well as to the audience in the conference room. Then the aircraft flew north towards Stockholm-Arlanda and on the way a Temporary Segregated Area (TSA) was activated. On the weather side METARs for the airports in Stockholm TMA were broadcast and a SIGMET was also issued.

Before approaching Stockholm-Arlanda Airport a RWY Closure NOTAM for RWY 08/26 was issued, broadcast and displayed. After the aircraft had landed on RWY 01L/19R the aircraft could be seen taxiing towards the stand outside the conference room both on the displays but also by the audience looking out the windows in the conference room facing the apron.

The whole flight could be followed by the audience on a big screen presenting the pilot Slectronic Flight Bag (EFB) view through data link. At the same time a number of other user applications was displayed on another screen, presenting the same information but from a ground based user perspective. Everything worked very well and according to plans throughout the live demo.

After the live flight Scott Wilson from EUROCONTROL gave a sneak peak about what can be expected as Digital AIM evolves, SkyView and Google Earth were used to visualise the information.

Sam Van der Stricht wrapped the whole day up and together with Roger Li he expressed his gratitude to the D-AIM team at LFV and EUROCONTROL making everything presented during the day possible.

The day ended with mingling and continued discussions over coffee. The overall comment from the participants was that the day had been very interesting, having a live trial demo really stresses the expression "seeing is believing" and what they had seen today looked very promising regarding what D-AIM can bring.
